What affects the cost
The charger itself: tethered (fixed cable) vs untethered (socket only), smart features like app control and solar or tariff integration, and charging speed (7kW is standard for most homes on a single-phase supply).
Installation complexity: distance from your consumer unit to the parking spot, whether a new circuit and RCBO need adding, and whether your consumer unit has spare capacity or needs upgrading first.
Any groundworks needed if the cable has to run underground or through an external wall some distance from the house.
Grants and government support
Grant schemes for home EV chargers have changed substantially over the past few years, and eligibility now depends heavily on your circumstances: homeowners with off-street parking, renters, leaseholders, and landlords are often treated differently, and support for small businesses installing chargers for staff or fleet vehicles is a separate scheme again. Rather than repeat figures here that may already be out of date by the time you're reading this, check the current schemes directly at gov.uk before budgeting, since this is one area where the numbers genuinely do move.

Does my consumer unit need upgrading or adding to, and is that priced separately?
Is the charger OZEV or PAS 1878 compliant and smart-charging capable, in case future regulation or tariffs require it?
What's covered by the manufacturer warranty vs the installer's own workmanship guarantee?
