Most electrical problems don't announce themselves with a bang, they show up as small, easy-to-ignore signs first. Here's what's worth taking seriously.
Warning signs to watch for
Lights that flicker or dim when another appliance switches on, which can point to a loose connection or an overloaded circuit.
Switches or socket faceplates that feel warm to the touch, or show any discolouration or scorch marks.
A burning smell with no obvious source, especially near the consumer unit or a particular socket.
Circuit breakers that trip repeatedly, particularly if it's always the same circuit.
Buzzing or crackling sounds from switches, sockets, or the consumer unit itself.
Round-pin sockets, or wiring insulated in fabric or rubber rather than modern PVC, both point to an installation that predates current standards by decades.
Why these matter more than they might seem to
Individually, most of these have a fairly ordinary explanation. Together, or repeated, they're usually a sign of ageing wiring, a loose connection under load, or a circuit carrying more than it was designed for as households add more appliances, chargers and smart devices than the wiring was ever spec'd for. None of it tends to get better on its own.
What to actually do about it
Get a qualified, registered electrician to take a look, ideally with an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) if you haven't had one in the last 5-10 years; it'll tell you exactly what, if anything, needs fixing, and how urgently, rather than leaving you guessing from symptoms alone.
