Choosing PPE and Workwear for Electrical Trade Work: A Buyer's Guide
PE for electrical work isn't just about looking the part on site, the standards behind it exist for real reasons. Here's what to actually check before you buy.
Insulated gloves
Electrical insulating gloves are rated by class (00 to 4) according to the voltage they protect against, tested to BS EN 60903. Class 00 covers low voltage work up to 500V; most domestic and commercial electrical work sits in the Class 0 or Class 1 range. Always check the rating matches the voltage you're actually working on, and inspect gloves before each use, a small puncture defeats the whole point.
Safety footwear
Look for boots rated to EN ISO 20345 with electrical hazard protection (marked EH on the standard), which limits the current that can pass through the sole. Steel or composite toe protection matters too, and composite toe caps don't conduct cold or heat the way steel can, which is worth considering for anyone working outside a lot.
Arc-rated and flame-resistant clothing
For anyone working on or near live panels, arc-rated clothing (tested to IEC 61482) limits burn injury in the event of an arc flash. It's not standard for every job, but it's a requirement on plenty of commercial and industrial sites; check what the site's risk assessment specifies before turning up in ordinary workwear.
Everyday workwear that actually holds up
Knee pads or reinforced knee pockets for anyone doing a lot of floor-level first fix.
Multiple pockets sized for testers, screwdrivers and voltage sticks, not just a phone and keys.
Hi-vis where site rules require it, in a weight and style that doesn't become unbearable indoors in summer.
Buying for a team
If you're kitting out more than one or two people, buying a consistent range across the team pays off: easier to reorder replacement sizes, and a uniform look reads better to clients and site managers than everyone in different brands.
